York Wins Two at CUNYAC Multi-Match

, NY— The York College men's volleyball team won both its games at the CUNY Athletic Conference multi-match Saturday afternoon.  The Cardinals defeated New York City Tech 3-1, (30-27, 28-30, 30-21, 30-21) in the first match and came back later to defeat the City College of New York 3-1 (28-30, 30-25, 30-19, 30-25).

After the two teams battled to a split in the first two sets, the Cardinals took control and won the third and fourth sets comfortably.  Freshman Arturo Cabrera Jr. had a big game for York recording 15 kills, nine digs and three blocks.  Sophomore Bryan Williams also put together a strong effort, finishing with 12 kills, seven digs and two blocks.  Brian Francisco added 11 kills and Alex Niles added ten, while setter Aruni Piantini recorded a match-high 34 assists and ten digs.

It was a tightly played contest throughout, but after dropping the first set, York was able to hold off the Beavers in the next three sets to take the match. Williams topped his performance in the first match and recorded 17 kills, five blocks and 16 digs.  Cabrera added 12 kills and Francisco recorded nine kills, six digs and four blocks.  Piantini had another great game at setter, finishing with 27 assists and 11 digs. 

 

With the win, York improves to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the CUNYAC. The Cardinals will host Lehman College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
