Wickham and Jarvis Lead York to Win over CSI

Box Score

JAMAICA, NY— Kadisha Wickham scored 26 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and swiped seven steals and Niya Jarvis netted 14 points, pulled down 18 rebounds and nabbed eight steals to lead the York College women's basketball team to a 64-59 victory over the College of Staten Island Thursday evening.

The win avenges three tough losses to CSI from a year ago, including a CUNYAC quarterfinal match-up which eliminated the Lady Cardinals from the playoffs last season.

The first half was plagued by sloppy play as each team turned the ball over 17 times.  Both teams went back and forth for most of the first half. The two teams would go into halftime tied after York's Joanna Josama drained a three-pointer as time expired.

In the second-half, York overcame a late seven point deficit.   With a little over nine minutes remaining, the Lady Cardinals found themselves trailing 47-40 after a lay-up by CSI's Olivia Tierno.   York quickly responded, scoring ten unanswered points, to make the score 50-47 with six minutes to play.  Six of those points came from Wickham.

With 1:30 remaining, the two teams found themselves tied at 57-57.  A lay-up by Wickham put York up by two, and after a defensive stop, the Lady Cardinals added two more points after Shadae Rice was fouled and made both free throws.   York picked up another defense stop and Staten Island was forced to foul with just 30 seconds left.  Rice connected on one of two free throws to put York up 62-57.  York stifled the Dolphins once again on their next possession and Rice drained two more free throws to ice the victory.

York lost the turnover battle, 21-13, but was able to compensate for that by out-rebounding the Dolphins 54-38. Both teams shot fairly equal on the night, with the Dolphins converting 38 percent of their shots to York's 36 percent.

CSI was led by Tierno who scored a team-high 19 points, while also grabbing eight rebounds. Katelyn Hepworth registered a double-double, netting 15 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.

With the win, York improves to 4-3, 2-0 in the CUNYAC, while CSI falls to 0-4, 0-1 in the CUNYAC.  York will travel to Amherst for the Amherst Invitational on Saturday.  The Lady Cardinals will battle Richard Stockton in the opening round at 6:00 p.m.
