NEW YORK, NY— New York University erased a 12-point first half deficit and rallied late to defeat the York College Women's Basketball team, 65-61, in the 2010-11 season-opener Monday evening.

The Lady Cardinals came out on firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 14-2 advantage after senior Elizabeth Padilla drained a three-pointer five minutes into the game.   NYU gradually settled down however, and tied the game at 19-19, when Tana Bertino connected from long distance with 5:59 to play before halftime.  The Lady Cardinals would eventually take a 30-29 lead going into the locker room.

It continued to be a tight game throughout the second half with neither team being able to pull away. With just under three minutes to play, York broke the seventh tie of the contest, when Padilla drained another three-pointer to put York up 57-54.   1:30 later, Bertino once again responded for NYU, connecting on a three-pointer to even the score at 61-61.

NYU then picked up a defensive stop on York's next possession and then drew a foul.  Maggie Ely hit both free throws to put the Violets up by two.  The Lady Cardinals could not convert on their next possession and were forced to foul with 25 seconds remaining.  NYU hit the first free throw and missed the second but the Violets got the rebound to seal the victory.

Despite the loss, Shadae Rice scored a game-high 18 points, connecting on 6-7 of seven three pointers in her York College debut.  Junior Kadisha Wickham added 12 points, three steals and 17 rebounds and senior Niya Jarvis finished with eight points and 11 boards.  Padilla finished with 12 points, while Maimouna Dabo added 11.

York (0-1) will host the College of New Rochelle on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
