JAMAICA, NY— In a wild doubleheader, that took over six hours to complete, the York College softball team came up short in both games, losing 14-8 and 21-16 on Friday afternoon.

Game One Recap

The game was tight in the early-going, with each team plating a pair of runs in both the first and third innings.

The Lightning held a narrow 6-5 advantage after four innings of play but exploded for four runs in the fifth and four runs in third to pull away.   York had a defensive lapse in the top of the sixth, committing three errors in the inning.  Lehman's Monique Sampson then blasted a two-run homer to cap off the inning and give the Lightning a 14-5 advantage.

York had its chances to come back though, however they left the bases loaded in each of the final three innings.

The Lady Cardinals managed only three hits and four walks but York still managed to score eight runs the hard way.  Lehman pitchers plunked nine York hitters in the game.  Freshman Geneva Faulk was hit twice in each game of the double header.

Game Two Recap

Game two was a marathon affair, which took approximately three hours to complete.  The two teams combined for 37 runs, 29 walks and seven errors.  Lehman put up a nine spot in both the first and third innings to take what looked like a commanding 18-5 lead.

However, York chipped away and plated four in the fourth and six in the fifth.  The big hits came from Sharlene Salazar, who hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning, and from Renita Raghubir who blasted a grand slam in the sixth inning.  Lehman shut the door in the seventh inning though, finishing off York with a 1-2-3 inning.

Raghubir had a big day at the plate going 2-4 with three runs and six RBI's.  Salazar was 1-4 with three runs and three RBI's and Brittany Patalano went 2-4 with two runs scored.

York (0-17) will face the College of New Rochelle on Monday. Weather permitting.
