VIRGINIA BEACH, VA— The York College softball team opened its 2009 season at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast tournament this weekend. The Cardinals dropped four games in the tournament, losing 9-6 to Gallaudet University and 16-6 to Lycoming College on Friday. On Saturday they lost 14-1 to Franklin and Marshall College and 15-2 to Randolph College.

Trailing 9-3 going into the final inning, the Lady Cardinals plated three runs and brought the tying run to the plate but Gallaudet's Alicia Balzer got York's Sharlene Salazar to pop up for the final out of the game. Shanay Patalano went 2-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored, including a two-RBI double in the final inning. Brittany Patalano collected two hits in three at bats and Geneva Faulk went 2-3 with an RBI. Renita Raghubir also recorded two hits for York.
Lycoming Recap l Box Score
Lycoming plated nine runs in the first two innings to put the game out of reach early. Shanay Patalano followed up her performance in the first game, going 3-3 with two RBI's and a run scored in the nightcap to lead York in defeat. The Warriors pounded out 14 hits against a pair of York pitchers.
Franklin and Marshall Recap l Box Score
Franklin and Marshall put up a nine-spot in the first inning on the strength of back-to-back home runs by Barbara Sasso and Lauren Incorvaia. In the third inning, the duo would once again hit back-to-back homers giving the Diplomats a commanding 14-0 advantage after three frames. The Lady Cardinals could only scratch out two hits against Franklin and Marshall hurler Meredith Morgan.
Randolph Recap l Box Score
York pitchers had trouble finding the strike zone in the final game of the tournament, walking 12 batters in the contest. Randolph took advantage, putting up 13 runs in the bottom of the first. York did score two runs in the top of the first thanks to a two-run double by Jessica Molina. Brittany Patalano went 2-3 to lead York in the loss.
York will be idle until March 16, when they travel to Polytechnic.
