@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball set to tip Saturday at Baruch in CUNYAC Championship First-Round tilt

No. 5 York College will travel Saturday (Feb. 18) to take on No. 4 Baruch College in the CUNYAC Championship First-Round

FLUSHING, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball returns to the 2023 CUNYAC Championship as the No. 5 seed Saturday (Feb. 18) with a first-round road matchup against the fourth-seeded Baruch College Bearcats (14-11) at 3 p.m. inside ARC Arena. The Cardinals lost both regular season matchups against the Bearcats, falling 57-53 at home (Jan. 3) and 69-55 on the road (Jan. 31). 

York has gone 4-4 in its last eight conference games, orchestrating pairs of winning and losing streaks.  As the CUNYAC leaders with 54.9 points allowed per game, 32.5 opponent field goal percentage and 21.8 opponent 3-point field goal percentage, York advances to CUNYAC Championship play for the third-consecutive season.  The Cardinals also stand out among the CUNYAC leaders in blocks per game (2nd, 4.5), scoring margin (3rd, +8.0), field goal percentage (3rd, 38.8), points per game (4th, 62.9) and rebounds per game (43.1, 4th). Among the NCAA Division III leaders, York's stout defense translates to sixth in opponent 3-point field goal percentage, 20th in opponent field goal percentage, 61st in blocks per game, 73rd in points allowed per game and 78th in rebounds per game.

Mac-Dege Dessource spearheads the Cardinals' attack on offense and defense, pacing the CUNYAC with 13.0 rebounds per game and a 50.3 field goal percentage, and grades highly in blocks per game (2nd) and points per game (5th). Additionally, Dessources is amongst the Division III leaders in double-doubles (4th, 18), rebounds per game (11th), blocks per game (26th, 2.4), field goal percentage (57th) and points per game (59th, 18.1).  Ellma Hodzic stuffs the stat sheet with 13.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 3.5 steals in 36.5 minutes per game. Alicia Gumbs adds 11.9 points, 4.0 assists, 3.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game.  Kristina Sierra shoots a team-high 30.7 percent from beyond the arc and averages 9.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Aminata Sagna's 7.0 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game offer another defensive presence. 

The winner of Saturday's first-round showdown will play Wednesday (Feb. 22) in the CUNYAC semifinals at the top-seeded Brooklyn College Bulldogs (17-7). From there, the championship game will be hosted by CCNY next Friday (Feb. 25) at 5:30 p.m. inside Nat Holman Gymnasium.
