@yorkcardinals Women’s Volleyball outlasts Medgar Evers to take 5-set thriller

York College travels Thursday (Oct. 12) to face Lehman College in a CUNYAC road battle

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball emerged victorious in a back-and-forth frenzy Tuesday evening against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (0-13), winning a five-set showdown (25-14, 25-27, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12) in a non-conference encounter from York College Gymnasium. This result is the first five-set triumph for the Cardinals since October 29, 2015, against Yeshiva University. 

"Both teams knew there was an opportunity to win. Going into a fourth and fifth set was new territory for our team. But we stayed focused and fought for every point. All the hard work through the grueling practices finally paid off with a win."-said head coach Mario Tang

First Set Breakdown
  • After a competitive 18 points the teams were knotted at nine.
  • The Cardinals went up a gear, as a 10-1 burst gave them a 19-10 lead.
  • Leading 23-14, a kill by Shamonie Miller and an ace from Tyler Dazey closed out the first set.
Second Set Breakdown
  • Trailing 3-1, Medgar Evers went on an extended 9-3 charge to take a 10-6 advantage.
  • Despite losing the following two points, the Cougars opened up a 20-11 edge capped off by two aces from Quiara Brye Bey.
  • York responded with a furious charge, as an 8-2 run cut the score to 22-19.
  • Saving five set points, spearheaded by three kills from Alicia Gumbs, the Cardinals overturned a 24-19 deficit to lead 25-24.
  • Medgar Evers responded with three-unanswered points, as a kill from Britonya Lloyd ended the stanza. 
Third Set Breakdown
  • Even through 12 points, York eventually mounted a 10-7 lead.
  • The Cougars went on a run of their own, as they claimed six of the next seven points to take a 13-11 advantage.
  • The back-and-forth play resumed, as the Cardinals utilized a 6-1 spurt of their own, attaining a 17-14 edge.
  • Ahead 17-16, an 8-4 run finished off with kills by Miller and Nadaysia Nivar gave York the third-set title. 
Fourth Set Breakdown
  • The Cardinals jumped out to a 6-2 advantage.
  • Four-unanswered points by Medgar Evers evened the score.
  • The set was close throughout until the Cougars authored a 9-1 run to lead 21-16. 
  • The Cardinals responded with a 7-2 spurt to tie the period at 23.
  • Two kills by Lloyd concluded the set for Medgar Evers. 
Fifth Set Breakdown
  • Both teams traded points to start, with the score level at four.
  • The Cardinals flexed their muscles, as a 6-1 charge finalized a block from Andrea Wright gave them a 10-5 lead.
  • The Cougars took the result down to the wire, as a service error from Mariame Gueye ended the match with the score at 15-12.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Miller tied a career-high with a match-leading 31 digs. 
  • Nivar and Miller paved the way with nine kills and five aces apiece. 
  • Gumbs produced a career-high eleven points on eight kills and three aces. 
  • Wright recorded a block to go along with four kills and three aces.
  • Samantha Panameno quarterbacked York's offense with a career-best, 25 assists. 
  • Jasmine Vega contributed career highs in kills (3), aces (1), and digs (11). 
For Medgar Evers
  • Lloyd authored many key points, recording a match-high 13 kills and 61 total attacks. Receiving the ball, Lloyd tallied 30 digs.
  • Brye Bey totaled eight points (six aces, two kills) to go along with a team-best 11 assists.
  • Jennifer Metra smacked down seven kills.
  • Aliyah Chapman contributed three kills and two aces.
  • Chapman, Metra, and Raine Williams all had 16 digs.
Inside the Box Score
York hit at a rate of .029 compared to -.030 for the Cougars. The Cardinals held the edge in points (64-40), kills (38-27), aces (23-10), assists (31-23), and digs (103-101). Both squads each had three blocks. For Coach Tang's group, they achieved season-highs in points, kills, assists (31), and digs (103), while their 23 aces was the second-highest amount of the campaign.
