@yorkcardinals Women’s Volleyball rallies late against Lehman

York College returns to home court Thursday (Oct. 19) to battle Pratt Institute in a non-conference showdown

BRONX --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball rallied late to take the third set Thursday evening against the Lehman College Lightning (3-12, 2-3 CUNYAC) but were unable to ride the momentum before falling 3-1 (25-, 25-, 25-) in a CUNYAC road affair from APEX Arena. 

First Set Breakdown
  • The Cardinals took an early 3-2 lead following kills by Nadaysia Nivar and Alicia Gumbs.
  • Both squads went back-and-forth for the next 13 points as a service error from Lehman knotted the score at nine.
  • A 6-0 burst from the Lightning gave them a 15-9 edge.
  • Both squads traded the next 12 points making the score 20-14, but Lehman claimed five of the final six points to win the set.
Second Set Breakdown
  • The Lightning attacked from the onset by gaining a 7-1 advantage. 
  • After losing a point to make the score 7-2, five service aces by Halley Viera facilitated an 11-0 spurt from Lehman to push the lead to 16 (18-2).
  • Alicia Gumbs sparked York with a kill that stopped a 14-1 run to make it 21-4.
  • Lehman won four of the last five points to grab the stanza.
Third Set Breakdown
  • All square at four, the Cardinals went on a 5-1 run to grab momentum.
  • Ahead 15-12, kills by Gumbs and Vega and an ace from Cherub Autar helped York charge to a 20-13 advantage.
  • At set point, the Lightning won three consecutive points to cut the deficit to three (24-21) before an attack error handed the Cardinals the period.
Fourth Set Breakdown
  • York carried momentum into the fourth set as a Nadaysia Nivar ace helped the team have an early 4-3 lead.
  • After losing the following three points, a 5-0 burst gave the Cardinals a 9-6 edge.
  • Lehman responded in a massive way, as an 11-1 run made the score 17-10. 
  • Attempting a comeback, a kill by Nivar cut the deficit to five (19-14).
  • Six unanswered points by the Lightning closed out the match.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Gumbs registered six kills on 25 kills to hit .120 in leading York.
  • Nivar and Autar both served two aces.
  • Samantha Panameno handed out 10 assists and scooped 10 digs to produce her second double-double in as many matches.
  • Nivar, Shamonie Miller and Andrea Wright all nailed down three kills.
  • Miller tallied 16 digs while Autar and Gumbs followed with nine.
  • Wright was a presence up front, totaling 1.5 blocks.
For Lehman
  • Viera served up a match-high five aces. 
  • Arianna Calderon anchored Lehman with 15 points on 11 kills and four aces to go along with 13 digs.
  • Daira Hernandez went for 13 points (10 kills, three aces) and 15 digs.
  • Ana Mena's 19 assists moved Lehman's offense. 
Inside the Box Score
York finished the match attacking at a rate of -.043 and peaked after hitting .111 in the third set.  The Cardinals owned the edge in digs (53-52) while both teams drew even in blocks (2-2).  Lehman put together a .152 hitting percentage and also outplayed York in points (55-27), kills (32-18), aces (21-7) and assists (27-15).
