Algendy’s 18 saves lead @yorkcardinals Men’s Soccer against Sarah Lawrence

York College opens CUNYAC play next Wednesday (Sept. 28) against Hunter College

FLUSHING, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer team (1-2-0) fell to the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (3-3-0) in their third non-conference tilt this season. It was the first match between the schools since 2019, a contest in which the Gryphons won 3-2.

"We showed a lot of character today. I'm proud of the way they represented themselves and the college."- stated head coach Courtney Boothe

Controlling the game early on, the Gryphons had a chance to tuck away a penalty, but Leon Branshvag put in wide. York goalkeeper Ahmed Algeney had a busy first half, making ten saves, and Sarah Lawrence's pressure paid off at 37:09 when Kayden Potts slotted home a pass from Jason Ciron. The goal was Potts's second of the campaign. With 30 seconds left in the period, York's Kamil Kuzminski found himself in space on the edge of the 18-yard box but failed to register a shot.

Down only a goal at halftime, York defender Djelili Okoro's injury late in the first half forced the Cardinals to play a man down the rest of the way. Sarah Lawrence capitalized on their man advantage early in the second half when Aidan Roney placed a shot past the diving Algendy. Responding 46 seconds later, York's Jaden Brown slotted home a well-weighted pass from Stanley Sanchez to half the deficit. Through on goal, Brown had a glorious chance to even the score later in half but blazed the shot over the bar. Attempting to sniff out the Gryphons' attack, with 13 minutes to spare, Caleb Gerdeman beat Algendy with a low blast, effectively sealing the result.

Across the encounter, Sarah Lawrence had more shots (38) to (6), shots on target (21) to (1), and corners (10) to (1). The fact that they only scored three is a credit to Algendy, who made a career-high 18 saves.

Stanley Sanchez also stood out. Tasked with a difficult midfield role after Okoro's injury, head coach Boothe was impressed how Sanchez "cover[ed] a lot of space in the middle of the pitch," and that he had "the strength to get that assist." One cannot discount Jaden Brown's contribution, as the defender's work as a forward in the second stanza resulted in his first collegiate goal.

The Cardinals (1-2-0, 0-0 CUNYAC) return to College Point Field to face conference foe Hunter (2-5-0, 0-0 CUNYAC) on Wednesday (Sept. 28) at 3:00 PM.
