@yorkcardinals Men’s Soccer’s strong second half in CUNYAC opener against Hunter provides encouragement

York College meets CCNY for a CUNYAC home encounter on Saturday (Oct. 1)

FLUSHING, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer (1-3-0, 0-1-0 CUNYAC) scored late in Wednesday's CUNYACopener, but were unable to overcome a four-goal halftime deficit, falling 4-1 at home to the Hunter College Hawks (4-5-0, 1-0-0 CUNYAC) from College Point Field.

Jaden Brown had a chance to give York the lead early on, but he put his one-on-one shot wide 5:23 in for the game's first attempt. Hunter then began the scoring at 8:44 when Blaise Enama took advantage of a loose ball at the edge of the 18-yard box. The Hawks doubled their lead twelve minutes later when Juan Mejia-Montero's corner trickled past York goalie Ahmed Algendy (1-3-0) to make it a two-score contest. Enama added Hunter's third less than five minutes later when he slotted home a pass from Barry Alpha into the corner. Ahmed Abukar added Hunter's fourth goal in the 44th minute, tucking home a cutback from Musa Feseru.

The second stanza provided hope for the Cardinals as Algendy thwarted Hunter's long shots, and Brown's lambasting run saw him win a penalty. In the 74th minute, Stanley Sanchez slotted the penalty home down the middle past Hawks keeper Antony Simos (3-2-0) to close out the scoring. Sanchez's penalty was his first ever collegiate goal. Brown burst into the box again at the 87:27 mark, but Simos collected his effort.

"I am pleased with our second-half performance. We showed toughness and resilience to play through some difficult circumstances. We handled the stress of being down 4-0 well."-said head coach Courtney Boothe

Across the match, Hunter owned the advantage in shots (32-4), shots on target (15-3), and corners (12-1).

The Cardinals (1-3-0, 0-1-0 CUNYAC) return to their Brooklyn home at Aviator Field for a CUNYAC matchup against the City College of New York Beavers (0-3-1, 0-0 CUNYAC) on Saturday (Oct. 1) at 10 a.m.
