NEW YORK --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) For the first time since 2014, York College men's soccer opened their CUNYAC slate with a win. The Cardinals took an early lead Wednesday afternoon to hold off the Hunter College Hawks (0-7-0, 0-1-0) with a 2-1 win from Randall's Island Park. The CUNYAC-opening win is York's first since 2014 (1-0 vs. CCNY, Sept. 20).
"It was a good hard fought win today. The men battled for every ball, and stayed in the moment for 90 minutes. That is what was required and that is what we did. I can't ask for a better start to our conference play."- head coach Courtney Boothe
York grabbed hold of the game in the opening minutes when
Kervin Mondesir netted his team-leading third goal of the season with a strike at the 4:55 mark. The Cardinals doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute with Mondesir's first-career game-winning goal by finishing
Marvin Mondesir's corner kick for the 2-0 lead. Hunter sliced its deficit in half in the 32nd minute as Sammy Ahmed converted a penalty kick to settle the scoring. The 2-1 final marked York's first win against Hunter since 2014.
Cardinal netminder
Ahmed Elgendy (1-2-1) faced 33 attempts and turned away 12 shots to record his first-career win. Antony Simos (0-7-0) made two saves in defeat for the Hawks.
Hunter finished with the edge in shots (33-4), shots on goal (13-2) and corner kicks (8-4).
The Cardinals (1-2-1) remain on the road Saturday for a CUNYAC matchup at 6 p.m. against the CCNY Beavers (0-2-0) from Randall's Island Park.
