JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) Prior to last Friday's CUNYAC matchup against Medgar Evers College, York College men's basketball freshman Wesley Chery spent his afternoon speaking with middle school aged students who visited the campus as part of the CUNY Explorers program.

Chery, a movement science major who resides in Brooklyn, connected with a group of 13 minority male students who currently have a void of a successful male role model of color in their life.  

"I was able to reflect on where I used to be through this experience, which gave me a chance to motivate a group of great young men," said Chery.  "We connected on a personal level, and also talked about all of the things I went through and accomplished to get myself here. This opportunity to serve as a role model helped me branch out and speak to new people about my experience as a college student-athlete. It was truly an unforgettable experience."

Chery was one of eight male role models selected from the York student body to take part in a rotation of intimate one-on-one conversations.

"I truly believe that this experience showed them that anything is possible when you put your mind to it," noted Chery.  "They were able to relate to me, and I used this opportunity to show them that hard work pays off no matter the circumstance."

The role models inspired these teenagers to further their education by attending college, and to pursue their passion.  

"What an honor it was to represent the York men's basketball program in this role as a freshman," added Chery.  "This was a great experience for me and at such a young age. There is no feeling like it."
