BOX SCORE THROGGS NECK--After a tightly-contested first half, Maritime College scored two second half goals to pull away from the York College women's soccer team, defeating the Cardinals, 3-0, in the 2015 season opener.
The Cardinals were outshot badly in this one (35-3), but despite that, were able to keep the match scoreless for most of the first half. But Maritime finally broke through in the 42nd minute when Gayle Woods picked up a loose ball following a corner kick and scored, making it 1-0 just before halftime.
Shortly after halftime, the Privateers put the match away, scoring in the 56th minute and the 67th minute to take a commanding, 3-0 lead. Marisa Athan scored the second goal on a cross from teammate Courtney Salatto. Athan later assisted on the third goal, setting up Julianna Avito for a score.
Despite the loss, York's
Sarah Hilaire was strong in goal, turning away 16 Maritime shots.
York (0-1) will look for better results when they travel to Cresson, PA for a match with Mt. Aloysius on Saturday at 1 p.m.
