JAMAICA, N.Y. – With an upset victory in the quarterfinals of the CUNYAC Championship, the York College men's basketball team has advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday, February 25 at 6 p.m., where it will meet up with Baruch College with a spot in the CUNYAC Championship game on the line.

York College (14-12) earned the #5 seed after going 8-8 in CUNYAC play.  They defeated their rival—the College of Staten Island—70-67 in the quarterfinals on the strength of a 29-point, 11-rebound performance from senior Jaron Williams.

Baruch College (19-6), the #1 seed, dominated CCNY in its quarterfinal match-up, winning by a score of 72-55.  Granville Gittens led the Bearcats with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting.

These two teams split the season series during the regular season with both teams getting victories on their home court.  Baruch defeated York, 62-49, on December 12, while the Cardinals edged the Bearcats, 50-49, on February 8.  The two teams played each other tough defensively this season, with both games featuring very low scores.  The 49 points for both teams in their respective losses was a season low.

Despite the fact that both teams have a long history of success in the CUNYAC, they have not met in the CUNYAC tournament since the 2005-06 season. That year, York defeated Baruch in the Championship game, 72-62.

Should York advance, it will take on the winner of Lehman College and Brooklyn College in the Championship game on Friday.  The winner of the tournament earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

There are plenty of ways to follow the action on Wednesday.  Free tickets are available at cunyathletics.com/tickets (you MUST download a ticket to gain access) and the game will also be streamed live at cunyathletics.com/watch.  York College radio will also be doing its first-ever broadcast of a York sporting event.  You can listen live at ycradio.org.  Live updates on Twitter will be provided as well. Be sure to follow York athletics using the handle @yorkcardinals.  Fans are encouraged to use the hashtag #CUNYChamps when tweeting about the event.
