JAMAICA, N.Y. –The pairings for the quarterfinal round of the 2015 CUNYAC Men's Basketball Championships were announced on Wednesday and the York College men's basketball team has earned the #5 seed. They will do battle with a familiar foe—#4 the College of Staten Island— on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Staten Island Sports and Recreation Center.
York finished the regular season with a record of 13-12, 8-8 CUNYAC, while the Dolphins are 17-8, 11-5 CUNYAC. The two teams have quite a history, especially recently. Last year, CSI and York met in the CUNYAC Championship game, with the Cardinals upsetting the Dolphins, 87-84, to capture their fourth CUNYAC title. The win put York in the NCAA tournament, while CSI was left out of the big dance.
This season, however, the rivalry has been one-sided, with Staten Island winning both contests by double digits. The Cardinals had no answer for CSI's top two players—Frank Schettino and Will Fonseca, who put up big performances in both games. On the season, Fonseca is third in the nation in scoring (26.1 ppg), while Schettino is second in the country in assists per game (7.9).
York has been led by senior forward
Jaron Williams, who ranks 16th in the CUNYAC in scoring (12.2 ppg), fourth in rebounding (9.6 rpg) and fourth in blocks (1.8 bpg). Fellow seniors
Du'Quan Lawson (5.3 apg),
Cyril Reid (11.2 ppg) and
Carl Franklin Green (8.8 ppg) have also been major contributors.
Ryan St. John has been York's main outside scoring threat with a CUNYAC-leading .392 shooting percentage from long range.
In the other CUNYAC quarterfinal match-ups, #1 Baruch College will host #8 CCNY, #2 Brooklyn College entertains #7 John Jay College and #3 Lehman College will welcome #6 Hunter College.
Should the Cardinals win, they will advance to the semifinal round on Wednesday against the #1/#8 winner, which will be held at the City College of New York at 6 p.m.
