CCNY Edges Women’s Basketball, 52-51

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's basketball team could not score on its final possession of the game against the City College of New York, and lost by one point, 52-51, Tuesday night.

The game was close throughout.  Neither team held a lead of more than seven points during the game.  The contest came down to the final play, with York down one point. Following a rebound by York on a missed CCNY free throw, York called a timeout with just six seconds remaining. CCNY pressured the ball well on York's final possession and Angelika Ruggiano was forced to take a running jumper from about 15 feet out on the elbow.  The shot hit off the rim and out at the buzzer, giving CCNY the victory.

York trailed for most of the second half but was able to cut the deficit to one point in the final minutes thanks to a couple made jumpers by Shauncia McClendon, who had one of her best games of the year, scoring 13 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and adding three steals.

Also chipping in for the Cardinals was Ruggiano who matched a team-high with 13 points, to go along with three assists. Danielle Dunn added six points and nine boards, while also matching her career-high in blocks with four.

CCNY was led by Giovanna Blanco, who was a force down low.  She finished with 21 points, seven boards and four blocks.  Karissa Core added 13 points, eight boards and five assists.

In any close basketball game it usually comes down to free throws, and the Cardinals will certainly regret their performance at the line in this game.  York shot just 38.9 percent from the charity stripe (7-18).   CCNY wasn't great at the line either but they were better, shooting 58.8 percent.

The Beavers improve to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the CUNYAC, while York drops to 1-9, 0-4 in the CUNYAC.

The Cardinals look to rebound from the tough loss on Friday when they visit Hunter College at 5:00 p.m.
