Baruch Rallies to Top Men’s Basketball

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The York College men's basketball team led by as many as 15 points in the first half against Baruch College on Wednesday, but the Cardinals faltered in the second half and the Bearcats rallied to top the Cardinals, 79-69.
 
York got off to a fast start, taking a 14-4 lead in the opening minutes of play.  Omar St. John was the spark, scoring eight of those points.  After Baruch rallied to cut the deficit to one point (14-13) at the 11:43 mark, the Cardinals went on a 20-6 run over the next seven minutes to go up by 15 points (34-19).  Baruch was able to cut the deficit to ten points at halftime.  The Cardinals closed the half, shooting 47 percent from the field.
 
But things went south for York in the second half.  The shooting went cold, as York shot only 28.6 percent and were outrebounded 33-23.  Baruch also caught fire in the second half, shooting 66 percent (14-21) from the field and from three-point range (4-6). 
 
Baruch slowly chipped into to the deficit in the second half, until taking over the lead at the 12:18 mark.  A three-pointer by Baruch's Matt Feldman put the Bearcats ahead, 52-51. The game stayed close until the 2:45 mark, when Baruch closed the game on a 10-1 run and finished with its largest advantage.
 
In the loss, York was led by St. John, who had 21 points and eight rebounds. Jaron Williams netted 16 points and pulled down eight boards and Michael Woods contributed with 14 points.
 
The Cardinals had a hard time stopping Baruch's Granville Gittens, who finished with a game-high 30 points and 14 rebounds on 11-of-16 shooting.  Feldman added 14 points.
 
With the win, Baruch improves to 11-9 overall and 7-4 in the CUNYAC.  The Cardinals falls to 12-7 overall and 7-3 in the CUNYAC.
 
York will host John Jay College on Friday at 8 p.m.
