Swimming Opens 2013-14 Season with Double Dual Meet

JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College men's and women's swimming teams opened up the 2013-14 season on Friday night with a double dual meet against Bard College and the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The men defeated Mt. St. Vincent, 68-13, but fell to Bard College, 57-29.  The women lost to Mt. St. Vincent, 69-11, and were defeated by Bard College, 62-18.
 
The men's team was highlighted by Alfred Clark, who won both the 50-meter freestyle (27.56) and the 100-meter butterfly (1:14.84).  In addition, John Castillo won the men's 100-meter backstroke in 1:25.01.
 
In relay events, the Cardinals 200-medley team of Clark, Castillo, Mostafa Elbasal and George Asmar won in 2:23.56
 
For the women, Sandra Shamburger picked up where she left off from last year, winning both the 50-meter freestyle (30.45) and the 100-meter freestyle (1:07.45).
 
The Cardinals will have a quick turnaround, as they will visit Baruch College at 6 p.m. on Monday.
