Women’s Basketball Opens 2013 With Loss to Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK N.J.—  The York College women's basketball team opened up the second half of its season on Wednesday afternoon by falling to Rutgers-Newark University by a score of 65-27.
 
A sluggish first half for the Cardinals proved to be the difference as York was outscored 50-8 in the opening frame. Rutgers-Newark (8-4) scored the game's first seven points before York got on the board. RNU then followed with 16 consecutive points to take a commanding 23-2 lead with 9:01 to play in the first half.  They would continue to extend their lead throughout the half. York would go on to outscore Rutgers-Newark in the second half, 19-15, but the hold was already dug too deep.
 
The Cardinals (0-10) struggled from the field, shooting just 21 percent on the day, while managing just four free throw attempts.  Meanwhile, the Scarlet Raiders shot 37 percent, forced 27 turnovers and were 14-of-17 from the charity stripe (81 percent). 
 
The Scarlet Raiders were led by Laura Shakiri, who netted 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting.  Jade Howard finished with 13 points and seven boards. York was paced by Ishonda McFarland, who finished with 13 boards and six points.
 
York will host John Jay College on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
