Fast Start Leads to Easy Win for Women’s Basketball over Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, NY.— The York College women's basketball team opened up it game against conference-rival Medgar Evers with an 18-0 run and never looked back, defeating the Cougars by a score of 64-21 to pick up their first win of the season on Wednesday evening.
York put up the 18 points in just five minutes of action with
Ishonda McFarland sparking the run, scoring seven of those points. The game was never in doubt from there as York continually extended its lead throughout the contest.
Strong York defense helped the Cardinals forced 33 turnovers, which they converted into 40 points. The Cardinals held Medgar Evers to just 13 percent shooting and dominated the glass, grabbing 64 boards compared to 42 for the Cougars.
The Cardinals were led by McFarland who recorded a double-double, netting a game-high 19 points and grabbing ten boards, while also handing out six assists and nabbing five steals.
Angelika Ruggiano finished with a career-high 12 points to go along with five assists and five steals.
Nia Rene added nine points and
Stayce Kay Muirhead had six points and nine boards.
Alicia Lee pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Medgar Evers (0-16, 0-7 CUNYAC) was led by Wanda Winslow, who netted 13 points.
York is now 1-14, 1-6 in the CUNYAC and will host Lehman College on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
