Briarcliffe Routs York Softball in Single Game

BOX SCORE
HOLTSVILLE, N.Y— The York College softball team saw an early lead evaporate quickly and eventually saw Briarcliffe College run away with the game by a score of 18-2 on Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals got off to a promising start after taking a 2-1 lead after an inning of play.  Consecutive doubles by Michelle Deleon and Joviette Frederick brought home the first run.  York then followed with an RBI groundout by Danielle Dunn, which came after Carmela Napolitano doubled in the prior at-bat and then advanced to third.

The lead would be short-lived though as Briarcliffe responded with an eight-run inning in the top of the second.   The Bulldogs had seven hits in the inning and sent 13 batters to the plate.  Briarcliffe would go on to score in every inning of the game, pushing across one run in the third, three in the fourth and five in the fifth.  In all, they totaled 22 hits on the day.  Shannon Dougherty led the way for the Bulldogs, going 5-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs.  Ivette Yi-Santiago was 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

The two teams intended to play a doubleheader but game two was called due to darkness in the third inning, with Briarcliffe holding a 3-0 lead.

The loss drops York's record to 6-20 on the season.  They will close out the 2012 season next Monday with a 5:00 p.m. doubleheader against St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) at Padavan Preller Field in Bellerose.
