JAMAICA, NY— The pairings for the 2012 CUNY Athletic Conference/ Con Edison Basketball Championships were announced Monday night and the York College men's and women's basketball teams will each be making the trip to Brooklyn to take on the Bulldogs in the quarterfinal round.
The men, who are the #7 seed, will tip-off at Brooklyn College on Saturday, February 18 at 1:30 p.m., while the women, who are seeded #8, will play on Sunday, February 19 at 1:30 p.m.
For the men, the other quarterfinal match-ups are: #8 John Jay College vs. #1 The College of Staten Island, #5 Hunter College vs. #4 Baruch College and #6 Medgar Evers College vs. #3 Lehman College.
The other women's match-ups are: #5 Staten Island vs. #4 Lehman, #6, John Jay vs. #3 Hunter and #7 CCNY vs. #2 Baruch.
The York men's team (8-17, 4-7 CUNYAC) came out on the short-end of both its games against Brooklyn (16-8, 7-4 CUNYAC) this season. York lost on a buzzer-beater (77-75) at Brooklyn on January 4 and later lost at home to the Bulldogs on February 8 by a score of 80-58. This will be the fourth straight season these two teams will have met at some point during the playoffs. Brooklyn has gotten the best of York, winning all three of those games.
On a side note to the game, York's
Omari Phipps will have an opportunity to surpass 1,000 points for his career on Saturday. He needs just seven more to reach the milestone.
The women's team (3-21, 2-9 CUNYAC) struggled in both games against Brooklyn (18-6, 11-0 CUNYAC). Brooklyn won 78-31 on January 4 and 72-42 on February 8. These two teams last met in the playoffs three seasons ago, with Brooklyn edging the Cardinals in the quarterfinal round.
Should the men advance, they would take on the Medgar Evers/ Lehman winner on February 21 at 8:00 p.m. If the women advance, they will face the Lehman/ Staten Island winner on February 22 at 6:00 p.m.
