Vails Continues Streak of 20 + Points as Men’s Basketball Cruises to Win Over Vaughn

JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College men's basketball team cruised to an 81-56 victory over Vaughn College in the Cardinals home opener on Tuesday evening. The win was highlighted by the play of
Tony Vails, who recorded 21 points and four assists and has now scored at least 20 points in all six games this season.
The Cardinals came out with a strong defense causing four turnovers in the first five minutes that led to a quick 6-0 lead. York extended its lead to 15-4 midway through the first half, while dominating the boards with 15—six of which where offensive.
Shamir Wilkinson pulled down four fast rebounds helping York get the lead.
Vaughn attempted to close the gap with three quick field goals but the Cardinals defense caused eight turnovers that led to 12 fast-break points, propelling York to a 39-20 lead with 3:30 left in the first half.
At the half York had a solid 15-point lead (42-27). York outshot Vaughn in the first half, making 53% of its field goals compared to the Warriors 33%.
The Cardinals then opened up the second half with a 15-2 run, which was capped off by a three-point play by Vails. The Cardinals lead was extended to 28 points (57-29) with 13:42 to play. The game wasn't much of a contest from there as York led by as many as 30 the rest of the way.
Along with Vails, York got a nice effort from
Michael Trowers who finished with ten points, including shooting a perfect 3-3 from three-point range. Wilkinson added nine points, ten boards and three blocks.
Thomas Hart finished with eight points and seven boards and
Terell Roper and
Jose Arroyo each chipped in eight points apiece.
Vaughn was led by Jihad Ceaser, who netted 19 points and pulled down six boards. Mahdi Macbahi had four blocks and ten rebounds.
With the win, York improves to 2-4, while Vaughn drops to 2-3. The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday when they visit St. Joseph's College at Brooklyn Technical High School. Tip-off for that game is 7:30 p.m.
