York Drops Doubleheader to Purchase

QUEENS, NY – The York College softball team dropped a pair of games to Purchase College on a cold, rainy afternoon Wednesday.  The Lady Cardinals lost by scores of 13-0 and 9-3 respectively.  Game two was called after five innings due to rain.

Game One Recap I Box Score

Purchase got off to a fast start and never looked back, exploding for five runs in the top of the first. Control problems were an issue for York as the Cardinals allowed the first three batters to reach on either a walk or hit-by-pitch.  After another free pass scored the first run of the game, Purchase got a pair of two-RBI base hits from Lindsay Froman and Alexis Vallario.

Three innings later, with the score now 7-0, Purchase put the first two batters on and then got a two-run single from Erika Stahl to make the score 9-0.  The Panthers then plated two more runs that inning to make it 11-0 after four innings of play.

Stahl also led the Panthers on the mound, tossing a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out six in the victory.  York's two hits came off the bat of Thessaly Belizario and Joviette Frederick.

Game Two Recap I Box Score

Game two was played in less than ideal conditions.  Both pitchers struggled to throw strikes in the cold and wet weather.  Purchase opened the game with a crooked number, scoring two in the first inning.  York got one run back in the bottom of the first, when Michelle Deleon walked, which forced home Frederick from third base.

In the third inning, Purchase plated three more runs to go up 6-1.  The key play in the inning came when Froman lined a single to right field, which brought home one run.  On the play, the ball got past the outfielder and Froman came all the way around to score.

The Lady Cardinals got one run back that inning when Belizario hit a one-out triple and then later scored on a infield hit by Shaunielle Sinanan.

However, Purchase continued to tack on runs and added three more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.  York added one more in the fifth before the game was called due to heavy rain.

With the losses, York falls to 1-11, while Purchase improves to 5-7.  The Lady Cardinals will visit City Tech on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
