Wickham Powers York to Win Over Brooklyn

JAMAICA, NY –York College junior Kadisha Wickham scored 24 points, collected 17 rebounds, blocked three shots and nabbed three steals to lead the York College women's basketball team to a 73-63 triumph over Brooklyn College Wednesday evening.
The wins improves the Lady Cardinals record to 5-7, 3-0 in the CUNYAC and they now sit alone atop the CUNYAC South Division. Brooklyn (6-5, 2-1 CUNYAC) also came into the game with an unblemished conference record.
The game featured a number of runs for each team. York got off to a fast start scoring on its first four possessions to take an 8-2 lead. That lead would be short-lived. After knotting the score up at 12-12, the Bulldogs exploded for a 13-0 run to take a 25-12 lead. Sharpshooting was the key to the drive as the Bulldogs drained three shots from behind the arc during the three-minute stretch.
York slowly cut into the lead and eventually tied the game right before halftime, when Shadae Rice drained a jumper to make the score 30-30 with 26 seconds to play in the first half. Rice would later add two free throws with four seconds left in the half to put York up on top 32-30 going into the locker room.
York came out on fire in the second half, scoring 11 unanswered out of the gate. Maimouna Dabo netted four points during the run leading York to 43-30 lead. The Cardinals would lead the rest of the way, not allowing the Bulldogs to get closer than five points for the remainder of the game.
Dabo finished with 14 points and five assists and Rice added 13 points and six steals. Niya Jarvis also pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked four shots. Newcomer Shadaea Green finished with eight points in her York debut.
Brooklyn was led by Amber Gordon, who finished with 15 points. Ariel Smith added 14 points and seven boards and Justine O'Callahan paced the Bulldogs with ten points.
York will return to action next Wednesday when they host Medgar Evers College at 6:00 p.m.
