Lehman’s De La Cruz Propels Lightning to Win over York

Box Score

BRONX, NY– Lehman's Amanda De La Cruz put up a game-high 31 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the Lightning defeated the York College women's basketball team 68-61 in a CUNY Athletic Conference contest Saturday afternoon.

York briefly held a lead late in the first half but it would be short lived.  Shayna Smith hit a lay-up with 8:48 to play before halftime to put the Lady Cardinals up 18-13.   The Lightning followed the Smith lay-up with 15 straight points and went up 28-18 after a three-pointer by Paula Robinson with 3:10 left in the half.   The Lightning would take a 32-24 lead into the locker room.

The beginning of the second half saw another Lightning surge as they extended their lead to 15 points (45-30) after a successful three-pointer by De La Cruz with 14:44 to play.  The Lady Cardinals did make a late run to make it an interesting game.  Another lay-up by Smith cut the lead to just four points (57-53) with 4:17 to play.  That would be as close as York could get though as De La Cruz responded with a jumper and a three-pointer on Lehman's next two possession to put the game out of reach.

Smith, who came off the bench to score 14 points and grab 11 rebounds, led York.  Elizabeth Padilla and Shadae Rice each had 12 points and Maimouna Dabo chipped in six points and 11 rebounds.

York falls to 7-9, 4-2 in the CUNYAC, while Lehman improves to 10-7, 4-3 in the CUNYAC.  York will visit New Jersey City University on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
