York Falls to Old Westbury in Final Game Before Break

WESTBURY, NY – The York College women's basketball team fell to SUNY Old Westbury, 73-53, in their final game before Christmas break Saturday afternoon. 

Trailing by two points midway through the first-half, Old Westbury went on a 23-13 run over the next 10:41 – fueled by 15 first-half points by Kim Weathers.  Weathers also added three steals in the opening frame. From that point, Old Westbury never looked back and took a 35-27 lead into the break. OW doubled the advantage on a triple by DeAndra Scott with 7:09 remaining on the second-half clock that put the Panthers up 58-42.

Weathers scored a game-high 28 points on 12-of-23 shooting from the field to go with six assists, five rebounds and four steals. Brittany Jones and DeAndra Scott followed with 11 points each while Shannon Gilly pulled down 16 rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

Three players scored in double-digits for the Cardinals, led by Kadisha Wickham's 14 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots. Joanna Josama also posted a double-double, combining 13 points and 10 rebounds while Elizabeth Padilla added 10 points. 

The Panthers shot 39.7 percent from the floor and hit 38.9 percent from beyond the arc while York connected on 28.8 percent from the field and 20 percent from long range. In all, the Panthers held a 54-40 advantage on the boards – including a 21-14 edge on the offensive end, leading to 28 second-chance points. The Panthers also owned the paint, outscoring their opponent 42-24. Both teams drew even in turnovers at 23 all. 

York (4-7) will be idle until January 5th, when they host Brooklyn College at 6:00 p.m.
