Men’s Basketball Falls to Kean in Home Opener

JAMAICA, NY—The York College men's basketball team saw it home opener spoiled by Kean University, losing by a score of 69-57 Wednesday evening.
The score was tight in the early-going until Kean opened up an 8-0 run to take a 21-12 lead at the 10:36 mark in the first half. A dunk by the Cougars Jonathan Jones capped off the run. York responded with an 8-0 run of its own after a lay-up by Kevin Lausell closed the gap to 21-20. Kean answered right back, scoring six unanswered to go up 27-20 with 5:43 to play in the half. They would extend their lead to 11 points, 37-26, at halftime.
In the second half, Kean (2-0) held a comfortable margin for the majority of the time. York briefly closed to within six points, after William Holley scored five unanswered points for the Cardinals to make the score 59-53 with 4:20 to play. However, Kean's J.J. Hladik drained jumpers on consecutive possessions to put the game out of reach.
Despite the loss, Holley finished with a game-high 24 points, to go along with eight rebounds. Marcel Esonwune added 19 points, eight boards and four blocks.
The Cougars were led by Jones who finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Michael Burton netted a team-high 14 points.
York, 0-2, will take on Oswego State on Friday at 8:00 p.m.
