York Tops Christopher Newport in OT to Win Captains Shootout

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – A long three pointer by senior Ryan Exum in the final seconds of regulation forced overtime and the York College men's basketball team went on to defeat Christopher Newport University, 71-61, in the championship of the Captains Shootout Sunday. 

 

Trailing by three points with six seconds remaining, Exum drained a 30-footer to force the extra frame.  Exum then scored five points in overtime and the Cardinals outscored the Captains 14-4 to win the tournament.  

 

York (7-5), winners of three straight, held an eight-point cushion (53-45) with 10:06 to play in the second half when CNU scored 12 unanswered points to take a 57-53 lead with 1:47 to play.  On the next possession, York's Marcel Esonwune converted one of two free throws to cut the lead to three points. After the two teams turned the ball over on their next possession, the Cardinals forced a defensive stop, setting up the final possession of regulation. 

 

Elijah Evelyn led all scorers for the second straight night, netting 23 points, including seven three-pointers, en route to being named to the all-tournament team  Esonwune finished with 22 points, 17 boards and three blocks, while Exum added 16 points, six boards and five assists.  Esonwune was named MVP of the tournament, while Exum was on the all-tournament team.

 

Mark Blasingame led the Captains (5-5) with 20 points and 11 boards, while Conley Taylor added 12 points.

 

The Cardinals will resume conference play Wednesday when they visit Medgar Evers College on Wednesday. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
