York Wins Sixth Straight; Routs Medgar Evers 97-60

BROOKLYN, NY – The York College men's basketball team continued its hot streak Friday night, winning its sixth consecutive game, routing Medgar Evers College 97-60.  Sophomore center Marcel Esonwune turned in another big effort to lead York, netting 28 points, pulling down 18 boards and blocking two shots to lead York to victory.

 

Esonwune picked up his 12th double-double of the season and was one of five Cardinals to record double-digits in points.  Nicholas Hamilton-Lopez scored 14 points and Omari Phipps also recorded a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds.  Rodney Bennett added ten points and eight boards and Elijah Evelyn finished with ten points.  Junior point guard Ryan Exum dished out nine assists and grabbed ten boards.

 

York has been a different team in the second half of the season. After starting the season at 2-11, York has won nine of its last ten to improve its record to 11-12 on the season.  York now stands in fourth place in the CUNY Athletic Conference with a record of 8-3. 

 

The Cardinals led from wire-to-wire in the game thanks to a strong defensive effort in which they held the Cougars to just 28 percent shooting.  York also dominated the glass, pulling down a season-high 81 rebounds compared to just 40 for Medgar Evers. 

 

In a losing effort, Ronald Holloway led the Cougars with 16 points and six rebounds and Kallai Sharpe added ten points and six rebounds.

 

York will travel to Lehman College on Wednesday for a CUNYAC cross over game.  Tip-off is at 8:00 p.m.
