Lady Cardinals Hold on For Win Over Rutgers-Newark

JAMAICA, NY— The York College women's basketball team held off a late rally and went on to upset Rutgers-Newark University, 41-39, in a non-conference match up Wednesday evening.
With just five seconds remaining in the game, Rutgers-Newark (5-6) had a chance to tie the game when they took an in-bounds pass from underneath the basket. On the pass, York's Niya Jarvis forced a turnover and the clock ran out giving York the upset.
Prior to the final play, York (4-4) held a seven point advantage (38-31) after a lay-up by Chiquita Greene with 9:38 to play. Rutgers-Newark then scored the next eight points to take a 39-39 lead, including five from Martyna Ruminska, with 4:01 to play.
After two minutes with no scoring, Greene put York back up by one with a lay-up with 1:40 to play. On the next possession Kadisha Wickham would hit one of two free throws to put York up by two before the Scarlet Raiders final possession.
Wickham led York with a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 boards. Greene finished with eight points, five rebounds and five steals.
For Rutgers-Newark, Ruminska led all scorers with 20 points, while also grabbing nine rebounds. Courtney Vacca finished with a double-double, scoring ten points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
York will host New Jersey City University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
