www.YORKATHLETICS.com)Â York College softball continued its home slate Thursday at Padavan-Preller Fields, coming up short in both games of a CUNYAC doubleheader against the Hunter College Hawks (7-19, 4-0 CUNYAC), 16-0 and 15-1.
Game 1: Hunter 16, York 0 (5 Inn.)
- Hunter set the tone early, capitalizing on a two-out RBI single by Abigail Bidinger in the first to break the scoring ice.Â
- The Hawks added two runs in the second with timely two-out hitting, as Bidinger singled to score Brianna Flores before Isabella Thumhart followed with an RBI double to bring home Bidinger.
- York looked to respond in the second, as Madison Keir's two-out bunt single moved Faith Howes to third and Keir into scoring position with a stolen base, but the rally was cut short on a pickoff play.
- Hunter broke things open in the third, stringing together clutch two-out hits, including an RBI single from Bidinger and an RBI double by Thumhart, before adding more damage with a four-run surge highlighted by run-scoring hits from Flores, Alejandra Aquino, and a two-run single by Grace Basil (4-for-5, 2B, R, 6 RBI).Â
- The Cardinals threatened in the home half when Madison Plaza walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was left stranded as Basil (W, 2-7: 5 IP, 4 H, BB, 12 SO) worked out of the jam.
- Hunter extended its lead in the fourth, to end the outing fo Simranjit Kaur (L, 0-4: 3 IP, 10 H, 9 ER, 6 BB) taking advantage of a bases-loaded walk to erupt for five runs in the inning, with Basil delivering a two-run double and Kaitlyn Mitchell adding a two-run single to put the game out of reach.Â
- York produced a two-out single from Howes in the fourth to keep the inning alive briefly, but could not generate further offense.
- The Hawks added four more runs in the fifth off reliever Melina Abreu (2 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, SO) to cap the scoring, while Samantha Panameno highlighted York's late effort with a two-out double, before Basil closed out the game with a strikeout to secure the win.
Game 2: Hunter 15, York 1 (5 Inn.)
- Hunter struck first, taking advantage of a fielding error to score the opening run, then extended the lead with a Sonia Rosales Rosenthal (3-for-4, 3 R, 3 RBI) RBI single and a sacrifice hit from Elizabeth Thompson to make it 3-0 early.Â
- Panameno led off York's first with a single.Â
- After allowing back-to-back singles, Abreu (L, 0-3; 5 IP, 15 H, 15 R (11 ER), 4 BB, 3 SO) settled down to retire two straight batters before Thumhart (3-for-4, R, 3 RBI) delivered a run-scoring single, followed by Adriana Ramirez's two-run double to give Hunter a 6-0 lead in the second inning.
- Faith Howes laced a one-out single to continue her hitting streak in the second, but was left stranded as Madison Drouet (W, 1-2: 3 IP, 2 H, 5 SO) recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame.Â
- Hunter pulled away in the middle innings, plating four runs on five hits in the third and adding another five runs on four hits in the fourth to put the game out of reach and extend the lead.
- Abreu worked a clean fifth, escaping a jam with runners in scoring position thanks to two strikeouts looking.
- The Cardinals answered in the bottom half of the inning, stringing together a series of productive at-bats. Howes started the rally with a double to left field and advanced to third on a groundout. Keir then hit a comebacker to reliever Thumhart (2 IP, ER, 2 SO), who caught Howes in a rundown for the second out. Keir advanced to second on the play and stole third. Down to their last out, Plaza delivered an RBI single to bring Keir home, capping the scoring in the 15-1 victory.
