York College hosts Baruch College on April 1 for a CUNYAC-opening matchup

OLD WESTBURY, NY--- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball opened its 2026 season on Wednesday afternoon after four consecutive weather-related doubleheader postponements, traveling to face the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers (5–5) in a non-conference twin bill at Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. The Cardinals dropped both contests, falling 18–0 in the opener and 19–1 in game two.

Game 1: Old Westbury 18, York 0 (5 Inn.)
  • York's Samantha Panameno walked in her first plate appearance of the season. Despite reaching base, the squad would go scoreless in the top of the first.
  • The Panthers began the scoring with 10 runs in the bottom of the first, totaling two singles, a pair of doubles, and eight walks off Simranjit Kaur (L, 0-1: 4 IP, 12 H, 18 ER, 16 BB, 2 SO). After the first six runs were driven home via an RBI walk, doubles by Jessica Feerick (3-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI) and Ashley Pierce (2-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI) produced the final four runs.
  • Both starters held the opposition scoreless in the next two innings, as Olivia DeRose (W, 3-3; 5 IP, BB 13 SO) tallied six punchouts for Old Westbury and Kaur got out of a pair of traffic jams for York.
  • Buoyed by three doubles, six walks, and two singles, eight Panthers crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth, extending the advantage to 18-0. Pierce and Faith Binaso (1-for-1, BB, R, RBI) had the big run-producing doubles in the frame.
  • DeRose sealed the 18-0 result in the top of the fifth by striking out three Cardinals.
Game 2: Old Westbury 19, York 1 (5 Inn.)
  • After a scoreless top of the first, Old Westbury sent 12 hitters to the dish in the next half inning, generating six runs off six hits, two walks, and one hit by pitch. Katie Knecht (1-for-2, R, 2 RBI) and Arianna Valle (3-for-4, 2 R, 4 RBI) both recorded two-RBI knocks in the rally.
  • Valle's RBI groundout in the bottom of the second made the scoreline 7-0.
  • The Panthers broke the contest open in the third frame against Cardinal starter Melina Abreu (L, 0-1; 4 IP, 18 H, 18 ER, 7 BB), utilizing two walks and nine hits (four doubles) to bring home nine runs, increasing the edge to 16. Pierce (2-for-3, 2 R, 4 RBI) did the most damage, providing two doubles and driving home four of the nine runs.
  • Old Westbury tacked on three extra runs in the fourth frame, pushing the lead to 19-0.
  • York put together its first rally of the campaign in the top of the fifth. Abreu singled and stole second base. Alyssa De La Rosa followed with an RBI single. The Cardinals could not add more runs, ultimately closing out a 19-1 scoreline.
