ork College men's volleyball opened its road slate Tuesday evening with a non-conference battle against the Pratt Institute Cannoneers (1-2). The squad won their first set of the season, but it was not enough to seize victory, falling in four frames (25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 25-14) inside Pratt Arc.
First Set Breakdown
- The squads split the first 20 points, featuring seven ties.
- Buoyed by a pair of kills from Brian Kim, the Cardinals held a 16-13 edge.
- Pratt responded with an 8-1 spurt to lead 21-17. Two kills by Max Wang and smackdowns from Griffin Benkovszky and Micah-Jude Upshaw paved the way.
- Two more kills from Wang clinched the set at 25-19.
Second Set Breakdown
- Ahead 4-3, the Cannoneers utilized an 11-2 burst to reach the double-digit margin (15-5).
- York claimed six of the following seven points to trim the deficit to five (16-11).
- That was the closest the Cardinals got the rest of the frame, as Pratt steadily built up their advantage, ultimately prevailing 25-16.
Third Set Breakdown
- Two aces by Wang got the Cannoneers off to a 5-2 beginning.
- The Cardinals followed with their own 5-2 run, with George Molina's kill knotting the score at seven.
- Both sides evened each other out in the next 10 points, as the scoreboard read 12-12.
- Behind 17-16, York went on a mini 3-0 to lead 19-17.
- Three Pratt spikes knotted the score up on two occasions, with Arturo Mata's making the score 21-21.
- After winning the next two points, a couple of Cardinal miscues leveled the score at 23.
- York eventually triumphed 25-23, the first set win of the campaign.
Fourth Set Breakdown
- At 3-3, the Cannoneers went up a few gears, going on an 8-1 blitz that gave them an 11-4 edge.
- Pratt extended the lead to double-digits (18-8) via a kill by Upshaw.
- The Cardinals managed to get the margin to eight on two occasions, but a late rally never materialized, as the Cannoneers closed out a 25-14 result.
Leading the Cardinals
- Kim produced a team-best eight kills on 16 attacks (.250 percentage) and helped the defensive cause with five digs.
- Alexis Ramirez added five kills and scooped up a game-high 15 digs.
- Jesus Gomez recorded an all-around display, distributing 15 assists, spiking down three solo blocks, and totaling four digs.
- Molina tallied three kills and six digs, Enmanuel Guzman Urena contributed three kills, and Keron Antoine had a net presence with four block assists.
For Pratt
- Wang dominated proceedings with 16 kills, four aces, four assists, and eight digs.
- Benkovszky had a great two-way game, generating nine kills and 10 digs.
- Upshaw chipped in with eight kills and four aces.
- Nathan Kim accumulated seven kills while dishing out a game-leading 34 assists.
- Raymond Liang (11) and Mata (9) combined for 20 digs.
Inside the Box Score
York produced 85 attacks and hit at a -.024 rate. The Cannoneers had a success rate of .200 over 130 swings. In addition, Pratt had the edge in kills (52-17), aces (12-0), digs (45-39), and assists (47-17), while the Cardinals swatted down more total blocks (11-6).
