BELLEROSE, NY-- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball opened their 16-game home slate Friday afternoon with a twinbill against the visiting St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) Bears (2-0) from Padavan-Preller Fields. The Cardinals were outmatched as the Bears collected a pair of 20-0 decisions to secure the sweep.
Game 1: St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 20, York 0 (5 Inn.)
- Vivian Garcia (4-for-4, 5 RBI, 4 R, 2 SB) broke the scoring ice for the Bears with a one-out single, driving in Olivia Martinez (2-for-2, 3 R, BB, SB) for what proved to be the game-winning run. After a costly throwing error allowed St. Joseph's to double its advantage, Autumn Poppett (3-for-3, 5 RBI, 2 R, BB) drilled a two-run double off Mulazia Woods (L, 0-1: 5 IP, 20 H, 20 ER, 5 BB, 1 SO) to left center, making it a 4-0 game in the first inning.
- St. Joseph's broke the game open in the second frame with 11 runs on seven hits, four walks, and three stolen bases to take a commanding 15-0 lead. Garcia drove in four runs in two plate appearances during the big inning, starting with a two-run single and later closing out the stanza with a two-run home run. Extra-base hits in the form of a two-run double by Payton Walker (1-for-1, 3 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB, SB) and a three-run triple from Audrey Scott (3-for-4, 4 RBI, R) contributed to the rally.
- The Cardinals allowed two more runs in both the third and fourth innings, before St. Joseph's closed out the scoring with a one-run fifth inning.
- York broke up a perfect game bid by Makena Burr (W, 1-0: 5 IP, H, BB, 14 SO) in the bottom of the fifth, when Michelle Mancuso laced a one-out single to center field for the Cardinals' first base runner of the day. Mancuso then advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch, followed by a walk to Tyla Hooks, but Burr registered a strikeout to strand two Cardinals on base to end the threat.
Game 2: St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 22, York 0 (5 Inn.)
- The Bears applied pressure early by scoring on a single from the No. 2 hitter that sent Martinez (4-for-4, 3 RBI, 3 R, SB) across home plate for the game-winning run. Kamryn Walls (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB, SB) delivered a two-run single that sparked a two-run rally, giving St. Joseph's a six-run lead at the end of the first inning.
- Compared to game one, York was more patient at the plate, working the pitches needed to place four runners on base. The Cardinals drew two walks in the first inning, with Simranjit Kaur earning a free pass to lead off the home half of the frame. A double play quickly reset York's position, while Alyssa De La Rosa (0-for-2, 2 BB) walked but was stranded.
- St. Joseph's posted a nine-run second inning, putting the game out of reach. The rally was highlighted by 10-consecutive batters reaching base safely, including six hits and three stolen bases. Woods (L, 0-2:5 IP, 20 H, 20 ER, 9 BB) settled down to retire the four-five-six hitters to end the inning.
- The Cardinals committed three costly errors in the third inning that led to four runs.
- Woods pitched a solid fourth inning, posting her first scoreless frame of the day.
- After retiring seven consecutive batters, Poppett (W, 1-0; 5 IP, 0 H, 4 BB, 6 SO) issued a walk to De La Rosa in the fourth inning, marking her second free pass of the day.
- Madison Plaza worked the count to reach base on a walk for York in the fifth inning but was stranded.
