@yorkcardinals Softball battles Purchase

York College continues its non-conference slate Sunday (Mar. 23) on the road against Yeshiva University

BELLEROSE, NY-- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball played host Friday afternoon to the Purchase College Panthers (5-1) for a non-conference doubleheader, falling by the final count of 25-1 in game one before a 23-1 setback in the finale from Padavan-Preller Fields.

Game 1: Purchase 25, York 1 (5 Inn.)
  • Purchase generated five walks and three singles in the top of the first inning off Cardinal starter Mulazia Woods (0-3: 3 IP, 10 H, 13 ER, 8 BB) to lead 9-0. The Panthers sent 13 batters to the dish, as Cameron Wright (2-for-4, 3 R, RBI, 2 BB) and Mel Harper (3-for-4, 4 R, RBI) recorded run-scoring knocks.
  • Halle Greaige (4-for-4, 3 R, 2 RBI) plated Wright in the top of the second to give Purchase a 10-0 advantage.
  • Michelle Mancuso tallied York's first hit of the ballgame in the second inning with a single to center field. Starting pitcher Ava Knox (W, 5 IP: 3 H, ER, 2 BB, 8 SO) got a strikeout and a groundout to keep the shutout intact after two frames.
  • A two-run double by Greaige in the third inning capped off a five-run frame, extending the margin to 15-0.
  • Knox struck out the side in the home half of the stanza.
  • The Panthers added two more in the fourth to make it 17-0.
  • Following a walk and two wild pitches, Jeana Clemons' RBI groundout plated Alyssa De La Rosa to get York on the board.
  • Devyn Hernandez's (4-for-4, 2 R, 5 RBI) two-run double capped off an eight-run top of the fifth for Purchase to finish off a 25-1 scoreline.
  • Controlling the offensive categories, the Panthers owned the advantage in hits (20-3), walks (9-2), and RBI (18-1). The left five runners on base as opposed to four for the home squad.
Game 2: Purchase 23, York 1 (5 Inn.)
  • The Panthers jumped ahead in the opening frame as a fielding error allowed Purchase to break the scoring ice with Arielle Reddick (1-for-3, HR, 4 R, 2 RBI, SB) crossing home plate.  Rebecca Bronzi (3-for-5, 3 R, RBI) then scored on a wild pitch for the game-winning run to make it a 2-0 game.
  • Trailing by three runs, Simranjit Kaur (0-for-1, R, 2 BB) worked a leadoff walk in the home half of the first.  Jeana Clemons (1-for-2, RBI) then stepped to the plate three batters later and doubled to drive home Kaur to slice the deficit (3-1) for York's lone run of the game.
  • Purchase created separation in the second with a five run frame on Cardinal starter Ayana Saavedra (L, 0-3: 5 IP, 19 H, 11 ER, 3 BB, SO), and added four runs in both the third and fourth, before a seven runs in the fifth settled the scoring.
  • Michelle Mancuso (1-for-2) slapped a one out single in the fourth inning for York's final hit. Following a free pass to Madison Plaza, York threatened with the bases loaded, but they were unable to take advantage as Olivia Goff (W, 3-0: 5 IP, 2 H, ER, 4 BB, 10 SO) got Amaniya Aiken to ground into a double play to end the threat.
