www.YORKATHLETICS.com)Â York College women's basketball outscored the first-place Hunter College Hawks (19-5, 13-1 CUNYAC) by 11 points in the fourth quarter Tuesday evening, but were unable to overcome a double-digit deficit, falling 76-49 on the road in their CUNYAC finale from Hunter Sportsplex.Â
How it Happened
- Consecutive layups from Alicia Gumbs had York up 4-3 with 6:55 remaining in the first quarter.
- The Hawks responded with a 9-3 burst to lead 12-7 at the 3:23 mark of the period.Â
- Baskets from Beautifull Earth and Amaniya Aiken sealed a 12-11 first-quarter scoreline.
- Hunter utilized a 30-5 scoring advantage in the second frame to take a 26-point edge (42-16) into the locker room.Â
- A fastbreak layup from Alexa Charles at the 8:20 mark of the third stanza put the Hawks up 30 points (48-18) for the first time.Â
- Trailing 55-20, the Cardinals trimmed the score to 29 (55-26) sparked by four points from Gumbs.
- Sophie Stratton's jumper in the waning seconds of the third pushed Hunter's advantage to a game-best 38 points (68-30).
- Earth, Gumbs, and Madison Plaza combined to outscore the Hawks 19-8 in the final period to close out a 76-49 result.Â
Leading the Cardinals
- Gumbs produced a team-leading 18 points (6-of-16 FG, 5-of-6 FT) and three assists while also pulling down six boards. Â
- Earth scored a career-high 14 points (4-of-8 FG, 6-of-10 FT), and added six rebounds (four offensive) and four steals to her stat line.Â
- Plaza netted 13 points (6-of-12 FG, 1-of-1 3FG).
- Aiken nabbed two steals, swatted one shot, and corralled four rebounds off the bench.
- Tyla Hooks and Michelle Mancuso each rejected one shot as Ceana Adams provided a presence inside with four rebounds.
For Hunter
- Charles went for 24 points (11-of-21 FG) and eight thefts to steer Hunter to victory.
- Erin Cosio drained 4-of-6 from long distance to follow with 14 points.
- Kennedy DeRuy hit on all three of her attempts from deep to score nine points.
- Kimberly Lau contributed an all-around effort with five assists, five rebounds, and three steals.
Inside the Box Score
York shot 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the field, 20 percent (2-of-10) from 3-point territory, and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the free-throw line. By comparison, Hunter knocked down 46.5 percent (33-of-71) from the floor, 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from downtown, and just 2-of-6 from the charity stripe. The Cardinals scored 11 second-chance points off 11 offensive boards, while Hunter outrebounded York by four (37-33). Hunter also owned the edge in steals (16-8), assists (26-5) and blocks (5-3).Â
