www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball opened CUNYAC play on Friday night, battling to their strongest stretch in the final quarter but ultimately unable to overcome an early deficit on the road, falling 79-33 to Medgar Evers College (1-7, 1-0 CUNYAC) inside Cougars Cave.
How it Happened
- Arta Gjeloshi's layup 16 seconds into the contest got York on the board, leveling the score at two.
- Imani Gibson canned the Cardinals' next jumper with 7:23 remaining in the first quarter, as Medgar Evers led 5-4.
- The Cougars responded with a swift 10-1 burst, as a jumper from Alexis Davis extended their lead to double digits (15-5) at the 5:14 mark.
- Continuing momentum, Medgar Evers closed the quarter with a 13-1 push, with Aaliyah Lyons' three-pointer as time expired, capping off a 27-9 frame.
- Furthering their offensive surge, the Cougars took a first-half-high 31-point edge (41-10) following Davis' layup with 3:50 left in the half.
- York showed fight the rest of the quarter, trimming the deficit to 25 (43-18) after Gibson's two free throws, before a free-throw by Jah Gunter ended the scoring at 44-18.
- Medgar Evers won the third stanza 21-2, to push the lead to 45 (65-20) entering the last frame.
- The Cardinals produced their highest scoring output in the fourth quarter, with Gjeloshi (5) and Zamora Wellington (4) contributing to their 13-point display.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gibson had an all-around performance, scoring a team-high nine points, gathering eight rebounds, and tallying four steals.
- Gjeloshi added eight points and two assists.
- Chamiya Foy hauled in a career-best 14 rebounds to go along with three steals and a block.
- Wellington (3) and Amaniya Aiken (2) combined for five assists.
For Medgar Evers
- Davis recorded a double-double with 17 points (8-of-18 FG) and 12 rebounds. She also contributed defensively with five steals.
- Lyons controlled all phases of play with a triple-double, netting 11 points (5-of-11 FG), grabbing 11 rebounds, and distributing a game-best 11 assists. The guard also generated six steals.
- Gunter added 13 points (5-of-9 FG), six rebounds, and matched Lyons' six-steal total.
- Sapphira Bamfield (12) and Jennifer Metra (10) rounded out the team's double-digit scoring.
Inside the Box Score
York shot 19.4 percent (12-of-62) from the field, made one three-pointer, and connected on eight of its 14 free throws (57.1 percent). The Cougars hit 43.6 percent (34-of-78) from the floor, canned three triples, and equaled the Cardinals' eight free-throw total. Additionally, Medgar Evers had an advantage in rebounds (57-40), assists (21-7), and steals (28-13), outscoring York 18-2 in transition and winning the battle in points off turnovers (42-15).
