@yorkcardinals Women's Basketball closes with strong fourth against Rutgers–Newark

York College returns to action on December 1 with a non-conference home matchup against Yeshiva University.

NEWARK, NJ --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball traveled Wednesday evening to take on the Rutgers University–Newark Scarlet Raiders (2–3) in a non-conference matchup inside The Golden Dome. The Cardinals turned in their most competitive quarter in the fourth before the Scarlet Raiders sealed the 82-38 final. 

How it Happened
Zamora Wellington's jumper gave York a 2-0 edge. Rutgers-Newark responded with seven unanswered points to lead 7-2 after four minutes of action. Wellington's bucket at the 3:57 mark kept the margin at five (13-8). Sanaa Brodie's layup with seven seconds remaining closed out a 22-10 opening period for the Scarlet Raiders. Keeping its momentum, Kyala Askew-Brown's free throw at 6:48 of the second frame capped off an 8-0 burst by Rutgers-Newark to go up by 20 (30-10). Both sides played even for the rest of the half, as the Scarlet Raiders entered intermission with a 37-17 advantage. 

Brodie's layup 3:53 into the third quarter finalized a 10-2 surge for Rutgers-Newark, extending the lead to 28 (47-19). The Scarlet Raiders stretched their margin to 39 (65-26) with 15 seconds left in the period after another Brodie layup. Trying to find more offensive success, the Cardinals scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, their highest total in the contest. A three-point play from Imani Gibson and a triple from Michelle Mancuso helped the efforts. Ultimately, Rutgers-Newark won the final stanza 17-12 to secure the decision.  

Leading the Cardinals
Wellington led the team in scoring with seven points (3-of-5 FG) and hauled in six rebounds and one blocked shot. Yanirzy Murillo matched Wellington's seven points and also contributed two assists. Chamiya Foy had a solid outing of six points, 12 rebounds (six offensive), and one block. Beautifull Earth shined defensively with a game-high five steals to go along with 13 rebounds (10 defensive) and a block. Amaniya Aiken also impacted the rebounding department with nine (four offensive). 
 
For Rutgers-Newark

Rihanna Abdus-Salaam totaled a game-best 14 points and seven steals off the bench. Brodie, Quanajah Felder, and Arlenny Medina all netted 12 points. Medina produced in other areas, tallying six steals, five rebounds, and three assists. Brodie supplied five rebounds, and Felder added three steals to their respective stat lines. On the glass, both Imani Mckenzie and Jaielyn Alston recorded a team-high eight rebounds.

Inside the Box Score
York shot 22.4 percent (13-of-58) from the floor, sank one three-pointer, and connected on 11 of its 38 free throw attempts. The Scarlet Raiders shot 41.6 percent (32-of-77) from the field, 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from beyond the arc, and 44.4 percent (16-of-36) from the charity stripe. While the Cardinals maintained an edge in the rebound (57-51) and block (4-1) categories, Rutgers-Newark won the battle in assists (16-6) and steals (20-6). Those 20 steals were part of the 38 York follies, leading to 39 points off turnovers and 23 fast break points from the Scarlet Raiders.
