Gumbs’ 22-point performance carries @yorkcardinals Women's Basketball against John Jay

York College travels Friday (Jan. 10) for a CUNYAC encounter against Medgar Evers College

JAMAICA, NY--- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball continued their CUNYAC schedule Wednesday evening against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (3-10, 1-1 CUNYAC), but could not capitalize on home court, dropping a 63-29 decision inside York College Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • Alicia Gumbs got York's first bucket at 8:34 in the first to make the score 3-2.
  • John Jay began to take control, as a 9-0 burst helped establish a 10-point lead (12-2) with 5:05 remaining in the period. 
  • A defensive display the rest of the quarter, Essence Richardson's jumper closed out a 16-6 edge for the Bloodhounds. 
  • The Cardinals got off to a promising second stanza, as Gumbs' driving layup trimmed the deficit to four (16-12) with 7:38 showing on the clock. 
  • The Bloodhounds responded with a 9-0 blitz over the next 5:43 to go up 25-12.
  • Richardson's bucket with 39 seconds before intermission ended a 30-14 half for John Jay. 
  • Following a Beautifull Earth free throw to make it a 17-point margin (32-15), York could not get any closer the rest of the way.
  • John Jay utilized an 18-6 third quarter to lead 48-20. 
  • A 15-9 final frame finalized a 63-29 victory for the Bloodhounds. 
Leading the Cardinals
  • Gumbs produced a game-best 22 points (8-of-20 FG, 6-of-8 FT) to go along with two steals. 
  • Earth contributed in many areas with five points, five rebounds, two steals, and a career-best two blocks. 
  • Tyla Hooks soared in for a career-high 11 rebounds. 
For John Jay
  • Ayanna Edwards scored 18 points (7-of-10 FG, 3-of-5 3FG) and added three assists and three steals. 
  • Michaela Lattimore dominated inside with 18 points and a game-leading 17 rebounds (11 offensive and six defensive). 
  • Ashley Zoella grabbed seven rebounds and finished with a game-best five steals. 
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 24.4 percent (10-of-41) from the floor and 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the charity stripe. Stout Cardinal defense held the Bloodhounds to 30 percent (24-of-80) from the field and 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from downtown. Inside, John Jay dominated the rebound battle (52-26) and finished with 26 paint points as opposed to York's 18. The Bloodhounds also forced 33 York follies, leading to 26 points off turnovers and 20 fast break points.
