www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball began their CUNYAC road schedule Friday evening against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (2-7, 2-1 CUNYAC), but could not take advantage of an 18-4 fourth quarter burst, as Medgar Evers emerged victorious 53-36 from Cougars Cave.
How it Happened
- Madison Plaza's bucket for York leveled the score at two 1:32 into the first period.Â
- In a defensive-oriented first period, Jennifer Metra's fast break layup ended the scoring at the 2:11 mark, with Medgar Evers leading 9-4.
- The Cougars netted the first 11 points of the second quarter, as Alexis Davis' layup with 5:26 remaining in the half gave them a 20-4 advantage.Â
- Alicia Gumbs went on a personal 6-0 burst for the Cardinals, trimming the deficit to 10 (20-10).
- Metra's jumper with 1:43 showing on the clock closed out the first-half scoring at 22-10.
- Blitzing York in the third stanza, Medgar Evers went on a 20-1 spurt to take a 31-point (42-11) edge at the 3:10 point of the quarter.Â
- Both squads shared the following 18 points, with the Cougars leading 49-18 heading into the final frame.Â
- The Cardinals produced their best quarter of the season in the fourth, outsourcing Medgar 18-4 to make the final score 53-36.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gumbs poured in a game-high 26 points (8-of-21 FG, 10-of-19 FT) to go along with eight rebounds, and two steals.Â
- Plaza contributed eight points, two steals, and a team-best three assists.
- Beautifull Earth recorded career-highs in rebounds (14) and steals (5). Both stats paced the squad on the evening.Â

For Medgar Evers
- Davis recorded a double-double with 16 points (8-of-13 FG) and a team-leading 13 rebounds.Â
- Sheily Quezada patrolled the paint, scoring 12 points (6-of-11 FG), hauling in 11 rebounds, and totaling eight blocks.Â
- Metra (four assists and four steals) and Aaliyah Lyons (eight points, five rebounds, five assists) generated solid statlines.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 18.2 percent (12-of-66) from the field and connected on 12 free throws. Medgar Evers shot 36.9 percent (24-of-65) from the floor and 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from beyond the arc. The Cougars also outpaced York in the rebound (55-47), assist (20-6), and block (10-2) departments. Both teams tallied 10 steals. Additionally, the Cardinals maintained an 18-11 edge in points off turnovers, while Medgar Evers won the paint points battle (28-16).
