www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball continued their road slate Friday (Feb. 9) with a CUNYAC matchup against the Baruch College Bearcats (14-10, 9-4 CUNYAC). After getting off to a slow start in the opening half, the Cardinals played the Bearcats even (30-30) across two quarters, eventually falling 80-30 inside Arc Arena.
How it Happened
- Baruch dropped the first 21 points of the game.
- A layup from Imani Gibson put York on the scoreboard at 21-2 with 1:56 remaining in the first quarter.
- A buzzer-beating jumper from Mia Castillo put Baruch on top 25-5.
- Extending their advantage, the Bearcats started the second frame on a 13-0 burst to lead 38-5 at the 5:29 mark.
- Netting seven of the Cardinals first-half points, Gibson's layup with 63 seconds remaining made the score 48-9, before Elissa Leung drained a jumper to give Baruch a 50-9 edge before the break.
- A layup from Angela Barcella at the 5:04 mark of the third period pushed the Bearcats' lead to 51 (62-11).
- A rapid 16-0 charge spearheaded by Alicia Gumbs trimmed York's deficit to 35 (62-27) with 55 seconds showing on the clock.
- Leading 64-37 to start the fourth quarter, Baruch outscored York 16-12 in the final frame to secure the win.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gumbs scored a team-best 22 points, grabbed six boards, and swiped away two steals.
- Gibson recorded her first double-double of the campaign (second career) with 12 points (6-of-13 FG) and 14 rebounds, to go along with a team-high three steals.
- Madison Plaza totaled seven rebounds, two steals, and a team-leading three dimes.
- Nadaysia Nivar tallied York's lone block.
For Baruch
- Castillo spearheaded the Bearcat offense with 41 points (16-of-27, 4-of-9 3FG, 5-of-5 FT), six rebounds, and five assists. Leung added 21 points (9-of-21 FG, 3-of-6 3FG) and a game-high nine assists.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 25.4 percent (15-of-59) from the floor, 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from behind the 3-point line, and 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the free-throw line. The Bearcats made 47.8 percent (33-of-69) of their field goals, swishing the nets from downtown at a 37.5 percent (9-of-24) rate.
Baruch also maintained an advantage in the rebound (47-38) and assist (28-7) departments, while both teams totaled seven steals. The Bearcats utilized a transition-based approach, scoring 31 points off 21 York giveaways, which produced 21 fast break points.
