www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball continued their four-game road trip Saturday with a CUNYAC encounter against the Hunter College Hawks (13-11, 9-4 CUNYAC). The Cardinals tied a season-high with 50 points, but were unable to push past Hunter in a 77-50 setback from Hunter Sportsplex.
How it Happened
- Level at four, the Hawks went on a 9-0 burst to lead 13-4 at the 6:44 mark of the first quarter.
- York kept within striking range throughout the quarter, as two freebies from Tyler Dazey chopped Hunter's advantage to 10 (24-14) with 45 seconds on the clock.
- Leading 28-16, Hunter blitzed the Cardinals for 12-consecutive points to go ahead by 24 (40-16).
- York's Alicia Gumbs manufactured a 3-point play to end the first-half scoring with Hunter leading 42-22.
- A layup from Emma Tung capped off a 16-0 spurt for the Hawks to begin the half, extending their lead to 36 (58-22).
- Hitting back, the Cardinals responded with a flurry of buckets from Gumbs, as she scored 13 points in the final 4:53 of the third quarter to pull York within 22 (60-38).
- A calm fourth quarter, Hunter outscored York 17-12 in the final frame to secure the win.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gumbs poured in a career-high 33 points (9-of-17 FG, 13-of-17 FT) and hauled in 10 rebounds to record her fourth career double-double. Gumbs also finished with team-bests in steals (4) and blocks (2).
- Madison Plaza added eight points, five rebounds, and two assists.
- Imani Gibson led the squad with 11 boards, extending her streak of at least 10+ rebounds to eight games.
- Tyler Dazey knocked down a career-high three freebies.
For Hunter
- Alexa Charles stuffed the stat-sheet with 24 points (11-of-21 FG), nine rebounds, and eight steals.
- Erin Cosio chipped in with 16 points (6-of-9 FG, 3-of-6 3FG) and a team-leading five dimes.
- Katie Burke paced the Hawks defensively with two blocks.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 33.3 percent (14-of-42) from the field and made a season-best 20 free throws. The Hawks hit on 45.1 percent (32-of-71) from the floor, 29.4 percent from downtown (5-of-17), and 80 percent (8-of-10) from the line.
While York outrebounded Hunter 39-31, the Hawks dished out 21 assists as opposed to the Cardinals' seven. The Hawks turned 33 York giveaways into 37 points, recording 30 fast break points in the process.
