www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball returned to home court Monday (Feb. 5) for a matchup against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (7-10, 4-7 CUNYAC). After an energetic comeback where the Cardinals briefly led in the final frame, the Cougars rallied for a 62-48 victory in a CUNYAC affair inside York College Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- A defensive battle at first, Imani Gibson's jumper for York made it 8-4 Medgar Evers at the 4:42 mark of the first quarter.
- Jennifer Metra's layup with 20 seconds to go in the first closed the scoring at 16-5 Cougars.
- Sheily Quezada's layup extended Medgar Evers' advantage to a game-high 19 points (28-9) with 5:26 until intermission.
- Trailing 30-13, the Cardinals stormed back with an 11-0 burst in the final 3:00, as Gibson's triple with 53 seconds remaining cut the score to 30-24 before halftime.
- Both teams traded baskets and stops in the third quarter, as a jumper by York's Madison Plaza trimmed the deficit to four (35-31) at the 3:44 juncture.
- Trailing 41-33, York culminated the third stanza by outscoring Medgar Evers by six points in the final 2:03, with Alicia Gumbs sinking three freebies at the buzzer to make it 41-39.
- Forcing the Cougars into tough misses, York took a five-point advantage (47-42) with 6:33 remaining in the contest after Gumbs drilled a straight-away 3-pointer.
- Buckling down, Medgar Evers responded with a 12-0 spurt to lead 54-47 at the 3:16 mark.
- The Cardinals scored their final point from an Alicia Gumbs free-throw with 2:26 remaining, as the Cougars closed the contest on an extended 20-1 run to win 62-48.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gumbs led the offense with 19 points (9-of-11 FT) and a season-high seven assists.
- Plaza poured in a career-best 17 points to go along with five boards.
- Imani Gibson continued her double-digit rebound streak with a team-leading 18 rebounds while also connecting on some long-range jumpers.
- Tyler Dazey hauled in a career-high seven rebounds, while Nadaysia Nivar gathered four of her own.
For Medgar Evers
- Quezada stuffed the stat sheet with 28 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, and six blocks.
- Andecia Liverpool provided an inside presence with 21 points (8-of-14 FG, 5-of-6 FT) and six rebounds.
- Jennifer Metra, Britonya Lloyd, and Nana Samake chipped in with two steals.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 28.3 percent (15-of-53) from the field, 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from downtown, and 60 percent (15-of-25) from the charity stripe. The Cougars hit 33.3 percent (25-of-75) percent of their shots and made half (12-of-24) their free throws.
In addition to the score differential, Medgar Evers had the edge in rebounds (45-40), assists (17-10), blocks (7-0), and steals (7-1). A dominant team inside, the Cougars outscored the Cardinals 44-16 in the paint, along with having 18 second-chance points as opposed to York's 12.
