www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball returned to the court Wednesday evening with a CUNYAC home encounter against the Hunter College Hawks (14-11, 10-4 CUNYAC). After a close first half, the Hawks pulled away with a 78-48 victory inside York College Gymnasium to close out the CUNYAC slate.
How it Happened
- Trailing 4-0, Alicia Gumbs scored-five consecutive points to give York a 5-4 lead at the 6:05 portion of the first quarter.
- An 8-0 burst for the Hawks gave them a 12-5 edge with 4:13 remaining in the quarter.
- Alexa Charles converted a 3-point play to close the scoring in the first with Hunter up 18-7.
- Trailing 30-12, the Cardinals conjured up a 6-0 scoring spree to trim the deficit to 12 (30-18) with 3:54 left in the half.
- Gumbs banked home a triple at the buzzer to make the 38-25 to Hunter at intermission.
- The Hawks began the third quarter in a 13-0 blitz to lead 51-25.
- Seven points by Gumbs helped spark a 9-2 run to trim the deficit to 19 (53-34) at the 2:30 mark of the third period.
- A 6-0 spurt to close the quarter by Hunter extended the advantage to 25 (59-34).
- York netted 14 points in the final frame but it was not as the Hawks emerged with a 78-48 victory.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gumbs reached the 30-point plateau once again (third time this season) with a game-high 32 points to go along with eight rebounds and six steals.
- Madison Plaza hauled in five and canned a career-high two triples.
- Imani Gibson grabbed a team-leading nine boards.
- Nadaysia Nivar connected on her first-career triple.
For Hunter
- Charles stuffed the stat sheet with 26 points (11-of-19 FG, 4-of-8 FT), 14 rebounds, seven assists, and five steals.
- Nina Hennessy tallied 13 points (5-of-7 FG, 3-of-4 3FG) and five rebounds.
- Erin Cosio contributed 11 points and four dimes.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 34.9 percent (15-of-43) from the field, 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from long distance, and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the charity stripe. Hunter shot 43.2 percent (32-of-74) from the floor, 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from beyond the arc, and 58.8 percent (10-of-18) from the free-throw line.
The Hawks outrebounded York 43-26 and had more assists (21-14). Despite a season-high 11 steals by the Cardinals, Hunter outpaced them in points off turnovers (41-10) and fast break scoring (28-7).
