@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball commemorates 2024 Senior Class versus John Jay

York College concludes its season Tuesday (Feb. 20) with a home battle against Pratt Institute

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball tied up their laces Thursday with a non-conference matchup against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (19-7). The Cardinals kept in close in the early goings but were unable to keep pace pace with the Bloodhounds as the vistors emerged with a 63-34 victory inside York College Gymnasium.

Prior to the start of the game, York's two-member Women's Basketball Senior Class consisting of Tyler Dazey (2023-2024) and Nadaysia Nivar (2023-2024) were recognized for their dedication to York Athletics with the annual Senior Day Ceremony.
 
How it Happened
  • Alicia Gumbs got York on the board at 6-2 after she canned a jumper at the 6:53 mark of the first quarter. 
  • John Jay exploded on a 15-0 burst to take a 21-2 lead with 1:03 remaining. 
  • Gumbs' 3-pointer with eight seconds showing on the clock made it a 21-7 game.
  • The Bloodhound defense held firm for the second period, as a layup from Ashley Zeolla gave them a 33-8 advantage with 2:46 remaining in the half. 
  • Zeolla's driving layup with 38 seconds left made the score 37-13 at intermission.
  • A jumper from Ayanna Edwards gave the Bloodhounds a game-high 33-point edge (48-15) at the 6:06 mark of the third stanza.
  • Gumbs orchestrated an 8-0 burst for the Cardinals to trim the deficit to 25 (48-23).
  • York's Madison Plaza canned a jumper with 40 seconds remaining on the third-quarter clock to make the score 50-25.
  • John Jay outscored Yok 13-9 in the final frame as Gumbs accounted for seven of York's points.
Leading the Cardinals
  • Gumbs contributed a double-double with 23 points (3-of-7 3FG, 6-of-7 FT) and 13 rebounds to go along with the team's only three steals.
  • Imani Gibson once again grabbed double-digit rebounds (13) and added six points.
  • Plaza chipped in with five points and six boards.
  • Nivar distributed a career-high two dimes.
For John Jay
  • Zeolla led the Bloodhounds with 13 points and totaled nine rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block.
  • Michaela Lattimore recorded a double-double with 10 points (4-of-7 FG, 2-of-3 FT) and 12 boards.
  • Edwards netted 10 points and had a game-high four assists.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 20.8 percent (11-of-53) from the floor, 25 percent (3-of-12) from downtown, and 75 percent (9-of-12) from the charity stripe. John Jay connected on 35 percent (28-of-80) from the field and 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from the free-throw line. 

The Bloodhounds had a large margin on the glass (55-36) and in the assists category (19-4). Additionally, John Jay got out in transition, scoring 27 points off turnovers and 12 points in the fast break variety.
