www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball trailed by four points after the first quarter, but were unable to close the gap Friday evening as the Lehman College Lightning (3-3, 1-0) claimed a 65-34 CUNYAC opening decision inside York College Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- Alicia Gumbs canned a jumper to give York a 6-3 edge at the 7:36 mark of the first period.
- Playing tough, Gumbs knocked down another jumper to keep the Cardinals up by two (10-8).
- Lehman closed out the final 3:11 of the first quarter on an 8-2 burst to lead 16-12.
- Extending their advantage, the Lightning began the second stanza on a 9-0 blitz to go up 25-12.
- Keeping pace, a 7-2 run by York trimmed the deficit to eight (27-19) with 4:27 remaining in the half.
- Defenses picked up in the final minutes, with Lehman bringing a 32-21 edge into intermission.
- A layup by Emily Kennedy stamped the Lightning's 10-4 to start the second half, opening up a 17-point (42-25) margin.
- Two jumpers by Madison Plaza helped stage a 6-0 charge by the Cardinals to trim the deficit to 11 (42-31) at the 1:27 point of the quarter.
- Lehman authored a 6-0 close to the third to maintain the 17-point (48-31) difference.
- The Lightning outpaced York 17-3 in the final frame to finalize a 65-34 scoreline.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gumbs led the way with 17 points, six rebounds, and a season-high six steals.
- Plaza added six points, seven rebounds, and two steals.
- Beautifull Earth netted a career-best five points and hauled in a team-leading eight rebounds.
- Widmaelle Drouillard produced one block and one steal.
For Lehman
- Musharafa Muniru had a game-best 18 points (9-of-15 FG) and gathered eight rebounds.
- Heaven Figueroa totaled 17 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and three steals.
- Kennedy generated 16 points (7-of-13 FG), seven assists, and a game-high eight steals.
- Ciara Shillingford hauled in a game-leading 11 rebounds.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 26.8 percent (11-of-41) from the floor and canned 12 free throws. York's stout defense held Lehman to 38 percent (27-of-71) from the field and 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from downtown. Outside the shooting percentages, the Lightning had advantages in the rebound (44-33), and assist (21-7) departments. Additionally, Lehman scored 42 points in the paint and 29 points off turnovers.
