www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball opened their 2024-25 season Saturday afternoon, dropping a 71-59 non-conference decision as the SUNY Maritime College Privateers (1-0) pulled away late to claim victory inside Riesenberg Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- The Cardinals got off to a strong start as Aidony Nivar scored back-to-back buckets to give York a 4-0 lead 53 seconds in.
- After Jake Devaney put Maritime on the board with a triple, Rohan Singh answered with a 3-pointer of his own to push York's lead back to four (7-3).
- Maritime responded with an 11-2 spurt as four different Privateers contributed to the spree.
- Trailing by seven, Adrian Owusu controlled the paint by scoring on two-straight possessions to pull York within two (28-26).
- Maritime rallied by scoring seven of the next nine points, and later landed a Theo Noble 3-pointer with 4:41 left to extend Maritime's lead to eight (38-30).
- During a 9-1 Cardinal run, Brandon Barrett scored on three-straight York positions while Singh converted on a 3-point play to slice the deficit to one before Noble landed a 3-pointer as time expired to send Maritime into the break with a 43-39 lead.
- Nivar and Bryan Godette both dropped in layups to break the second-half scoring ice to knot the game at 43.
- The Privateers regained control by scoring 21 of the game's next 32 points to build a 10-point lead with 64-54 with 5:24 showing on the clock.
- During the second-half push, York got as close as three (55-52) on a Michael Litchfield jumper with 9:34 remaining before Maritime countered with a 16-7 run over the final 8:07 to secure the 12-point win.
Leading the Cardinals
- Singh paced York with 14 points (5-of-9 FG), and added five assists and three steals to his performance.
- Nivar totaled 13 points (5-of-15 FG), six rebounds and one steal.
- Godette collected eight points (4-of-6), six rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
- Barrett chipped in eight points (4-of-7 FG) and pulled down nine boards (four offensive).
- Adrian Owusu contributed a career-high nine rebounds (five offensive) and scored six points to go with one block.
For Maritime
- Devaney led Maritime to victory with 21 points (8-of-17 FG, 2-of-4 3FG), eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
- Noble went for 20 points (8-of-14 FG, 4-of-9 3FG), six rebounds and three steals
- Jake Murphy netted 15 points (6-of-12 FG), nine rebounds and two steals.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 41.4 percent (26-of-63) from the field, 14.3 percent (3-of-21) from beyond the arc and 40 percent (4-of-10) from the free-throw line. Maritime hit 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the floor, 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from deep, and 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from the line. York won the blocks battle, 5-4, and owned the edge in rebounds (47-35), scoring 16 second-chance points off 17 offensive boards. Both teams drew even in points in the paint (38-38), while the Privateers converted 23 Cardinal miscues into 23 points, and outplayed York in assists (15-11) and steals (14-7).
