www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball continued their four-game homestand Saturday afternoon, falling in non-conference action to the Rutgers University-Newark Scarlet Raiders (3-3) by the final count of 83-43 inside York College Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- Nnena Ndukwu's layup at the 4:42 mark in the first quarter capped off a 10-0 beginning for Rutgers-Newark.
- Following three-consecutive points by York's Alicia Gumbs, Scarlet Raiders' forward Kayla Askew-Branch converted a layup to end the period at 22-4.
- A 12-4 spurt from Rutgers-Newark to open the second frame made the score 34-8.
- Gumbs netted a tough triple with 12 seconds remaining in the half to make it 42-14.
- The senior guard was directly responsible for 11 of the Cardinals' 13 points in the third stanza, as the Scarlet Raiders entered the fourth leading 65-28.
- Both teams played each other tough in the final frame, with Rutgers-Newark closing out an 83-43 victory.
Leading the Cardinals
- Gumbs recorded a double-double, netting a game-high 28 points (8-22 FG, 11-16 FT) and a team-leading 11 rebounds. She also dished out three assists and tallied a team-best four steals.
- Madison Plaza scored eight points, collected six rebounds, and authored York's lone block of the contest.
- Widmaelle Drouillard added five points and two steals.
- Tyla Hooks was tough on the glass with a career-high six rebounds.
For Rutgers-Newark
- Arlenny Medina stuffed the stat sheet with 23 points (10-19 FG, 3-5 FT), 12 rebounds, seven assists, and nine steals.
- Tracey Ilderis produced a double-double with 12 points (5-11 FG) and a dozen rebounds to go along with four steals.
- Aliyah Sanchez scored 12 points (5-7 FG) and Raihanna Abdus-Salaam chipped in with 10 points (5-11 FG).
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 26.7 (12-of-45) percent from the field and made a season-high 18 free throws. Rutgers-Newark shot 46.8 percent (36-of-77) from the floor and canned 11 freebies. Additionally, the Scarlet Raiders outplayed York in rebounds (53-27), assists (17-7), and steals (23-7). Rutgers-Newark scored 68 points in the paint, managed 28 fast-break points and 44 points off turnovers.
