@yorkcardinals Women’s Volleyball mounts thrilling comeback in win over Medgar Evers

York College continues CUNYAC play Tuesday (Oct. 29) at John Jay College

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com)York College women's volleyball returned to home court Thursday evening with a CUNYAC thriller that saw the Cardinals erase a two-set deficit to top the Medgar Evers College Cougars (record) in five (21-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-17, 15-8) on Dig Pink night inside York College Gymnasium.

in support of creating awareness for the Sideout Foundation's mission of connecting the sport of volleyball to a meaningful mission: to change the future of cancer care.​

First Set Breakdown
  • Level at four, Medgar Evers utilized a 7-1 burst to lead 11-5.
  • Both squads split the following 16 points, with Jenifer Metra's kill maintaining the Cougars six-point edge (19-13).
  • A pair of service aces from Samantha Panameno trimmed York's deficit to two (21-19).
  • Two smackdowns by Britonya Lloyd sealed the set for Medgar at 25-21.
Second Set Breakdown
  • A pair of kills by Jachimma Onwuamaegbu helped the Cardinals get off to an early 6-3 advantage. 
  • Knotted at seven, a couple of kills by Maritza Ortega Ramirez helped spark a 5-1 York burst to lead 12-8.
  • Trailing 13-9, the Cougars went on a 9-2 charge to take an 18-15 lead.
  • Three consecutive kills by York made the scoreline 18-18.
  • In an intense final stage of the period, Medgar Evers ultimately clutched out a 25-22 set result.
Third Set Breakdown
  • With contributions from the entire team, the Cardinals got some early momentum with a 9-5 edge.
  • Leading 14-11, York took a commanding 19-12 edge capped off by a kill by Panameno.
  • A pair of aces from Jasmine Dias helped the Cardinals hold onto their lead before closing out a 25-19 scoreline.
Fourth Set Breakdown
  • Behind 3-2, a trio of aces from York's Vanessa Ramirez guided the Cardinals to a 9-3 lead.
  • The Cougars got back into the stanza at 13-10 following Lloyd's two kills.
  • Medgar cut the deficit to two (16-14) before the Cardinals put the scoreline out of sight (23-14) with a 7-0 blitz.
  • A Cougar attacking error sealed the 25-17 result. 
Fifth Set Breakdown
  • Lloyd notched the first two points of the 15-point contest.
  • Down 3-1, a couple of aces by Simranjit Kaur and a pair of well-placed smackdowns from Onwuamaegbu catapulted a 10-1 spurt, giving York an 11-4 lead.
  • Attempting to close out the match up 12-8, kills by Madison Plaza and Ortega Ramirez ensured the Cardinals' second triumph of the campaign. 
Leading the Cardinals
  • Onwuamaegbu dominated at the net, tallying career-bests in points (14), kills (9), and solo blocks (5).  
  • Ortega Ramirez smacked down eight kills and contributed defensively with 11 digs. 
  • Plaza added a career-high seven kills to go along with nine digs. 
  • Panameno generated seven points (four kills and three aces) and commanded the offense with 23 assists.
  • Alicia Gumbs added five kills and Dias contributed with a team-leading 17 digs.
For Medgar Evers
  • Lloyd paced the Cougars with a match-best 17 points (11 kills, four aces, and two blocks).
  • Metra totaled eight kills and scooped up 20 digs.
  • Adacia Scotland served three aces and popped up with 13 digs.
  • Scotland, Sariyah Brumaire, and Aliyah Chapman combined for 16 of Medgar's 20 assists.
Inside the Box Score
York hit -.019 on a season-high 158 attacks, while Medgar attacked at a -.07 clip on 142 attempts. Stuffing the stat sheet, the Cardinals controlled the proceedings in points (56-39), kills (33-26), aces (17-10), assists (29-20), block (6-3), and digs (77-76). The point, kill, assist, and dig totals were all season-bests for York.
